New citizens welcomed Wednesday 25 April

East Gippsland has 21 new Australian citizens following a citizenship ceremony held in the East Gippsland Shire Council Chambers last week.

Those taking part in the ceremony hailed from India, the Philippines, United Kingdom, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa, Peru and Mauritius.

The ceremony was council’s first to be live streamed.

Mayor Cr Joe Rettino said the live streaming had been a successful addition to the ceremony.

“A number of citizenship candidates reported that their family and friends overseas had taken the opportunity to watch the special event via the internet. So far, the video has been viewed over 190 times,” Cr Rettino said.

To watch the archived citizenship ceremony video, go to council's YouTube account, East Gippy TV.

Chris Cannon’s proud family watched him take part in the citizenship ceremony. Pictured are granddaughters Tahlia and Lara Tincknell, daughter Jo Cannon, and wife Vanessa Cannon.

Swathi Kartik and husband Kartik Venkatraman of India became Australian citizens last week. Mr Venkatraman said his mother watched the ceremony online.
