To help the people of Dili, Timor-Leste recover from the recent flood disaster event, City of Darwin and the Sister City Advisory Committee are donating $10,000 in support.

Council has had a Sister City relationship with Dili since 2003 that aims to enhance cross-cultural understanding to build vibrant and connected communities for both cities.

Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis said the flood event in Dili has had devastating effects on the community and Council is only too happy to provide assistance.

“We value our relationship with our close neighbour and hope that our donation will go some way to assist in their recovery.

“In addition to the $10,000 donation, council staff, members of the Sister City Advisory Committee and a representative of the Consulate-General Office of Timor- Leste will also be hosting a stall at the Mindil Markets to encourage community members to make a donation. In-kind support is also being sought from local builders to assist with the supply of building materials.

“This is a great opportunity for Council and the community to come together and provide assistance to our Dili neighbour.”

The $10,000 donation will be provided to Cruz Vermelha De Timor-Leste (Red Cross Timor-Leste, CVTL) who are administering the humanitarian aid program in Dili.

Council staff will be at Mindil Markets on Thursday, 6 May and Sunday, 9 May 2021.
