City of Darwin is again supporting the annual Ride2Work Day, being held this year on Wednesday 16 October. Ride2Work Day encourages everyday people to jump on a bike and get active by riding to work.

A national initiative of Bicycle Network Australia, the event has been supported by City of Darwin for 9 years.

“City of Darwin is delighted to be supporting this event again in 2019,” said Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis “cycling is a fun and healthy way to get to work and does not produce any carbon emissions.”

Cyclists are encouraged to ride to work on 16 October and businesses that support the event will be provided with vouchers from City of Darwin to provide breakfast for those that do.

“Our aim is to promote a healthy, liveable, cool and green city,” said Lord Mayor Vatskalis “and events such as the Ride 2 Work Day support this.”

City of Darwin has more than 590km of shared paths and walkways across the municipality, providing ample opportunity for people to enjoy cycling. Darwin has the highest rate of community participation in cycling of any capital city and also has the highest ratio of female participation.

“Cycling is a great activity that can be enjoyed year round in Darwin, as we have a relatively flat terrain and great year round weather.” said Lord Mayor Vatskalis.

“City of Darwin continues to invest in shared paths and new paths.  Garramilla Boulevard has recently been opened and there are more paths planned for Lee Point.”

Lord Mayor Vatskalis recently declared a climate emergency in Darwin and highlighted that cycling is a great way to reduce carbon emissions.

Vouchers, with a value up to $100 will be provided to organisations that register participants in Ride2Work Day.
