Council provides meaningful employment for staff at the Alpurrurulam Aged Care Centre.

Posted: Friday, 7 September 2018

Each morning Barkly Regional Council staff Nevenka Nemo and Cameron Long start preparing breakfast for the older residents of the Indigenous community of Alpurrurulam.

Nevenka, who is working towards a Certificate III in Hospitality and Food Handling, as well as a Certificate II in Management through Council, says working is a good thing to do.

"I can't wait to get my first certificates," she said.

For Cameron, cooking in the community is a balance between healthy and traditional meals. He said the old men like the drover fare of corn beef, rib bones and steak and reckon the healthy food doesn't fill them up.

The Alpurrurulam Aged Care Centre has about 20 clients, mostly older residents, but also a few people with disabilities.
