New Aussie citizens welcomed

There's no better day to become an Aussie than on Australia Day as two new locals will attest.

More than 16,000 people choose 26 January to become an Australian citizen and last Friday Barkly Regional Council Mayor Steve Edgington welcomed two new Tennantites from India to the town at an official Citizenship Ceremony up at Battery Hill Mining Centre. Johncy Boby and Jini Joy were both born and brought up in Kerala, southern India, where they completed their schooling and higher studies in nursing. In 2004, both Johncy and Jini were given an opportunity to work in the United Kingdom as registered nurses with Johncy landing a job in Cambridge and Jini going to Edinburgh, Scotland, for her position. Interestingly, neither of them knew each other growing up in India but in 2005 they met through friends in Edinburgh. The following year Johncy proposed and the two were married in 2007. They now have two children, Johan and Jeslyn, and are known amongst friends as the ‘J’ family. Johncy and Jini came to town in 2012 when they landed a job opportunity at the Tennant Creek Hospital. Johncy works as the Nurse Manager and Jini works as the Renal Unit Manager. They both love Tennant Creek and its people and enjoy the outback lifestyle. They are also both mindful of the responsibilities of being an Australian citizen and say they will respect and value this privilege.
