Town Hall turns Royal Purple

Albany’s iconic Town Hall is turning royal purple this June long weekend in honour of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II becoming the first Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee.

The Australian Government is inviting all Australians from as far as Adelaide to Albany and Canberra to Cranbrook to get involved by illuminating a local building or hosting an event.

Between June 2 to 5, iconic buildings and monuments across Australia will be illuminated in royal purple to mark the Queen’s 70 years of service.

Mayor of Albany Dennis Wellington said Albany Town Hall was the perfect location to recognise this momentous occasion.

“Australia’s relationship with the royal family plays an important role in our nation’s history and in Albany’s history,” he said.

“In 1977 Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip made a momentous visit to Albany as part of the State’s 150th commemorations.

“Residents gathered at the Albany Airport and along York Street to get a glimpse of the Royal Couple and welcome them to our beautiful City.”

Albany’s iconic Brig Amity will also be lighting up in royal purple along Princess Royal Drive for the occasion.
