Feedback considered for off-lead access areas consultation

Published on 15 February 2022

Over the past few months, the City of Swan has sought feedback about the proposal to allocate specific off-lead access areas for dog exercise, instead of the current arrangement where dogs are allowed off-lead in all but a few select locations.

The City received a strong response from local dog owners and we thank everyone for taking the time to voice their opinion and provide feedback.

While the City is currently collating the feedback and suggestions about how to improve the community’s interaction with dogs, it is clear community does not support the current proposal.

No changes to the City’s dog exercise and dog-prohibited areas will be made until your feedback is presented to and considered by Council, and community is able to provide further commentary.

Some key themes heard through the consultation included:

the need for dog exercise or dog off-lead areas in every suburb, a mix of both fenced and non-fenced exercise areas for dogs, and improved consistent signage and more proactive measures to encourage good dog behaviour.

In 2021 there were 77 dog attacks recorded within public spaces in the City. This includes dogs attacking people and dogs attacking other dogs. With more than 17,700 registered dogs in the City of Swan, it is important to consider how the community shares the open spaces and public amenities.

A full report will be presented to Council in the coming months. Visit the Review of dog access areas have your say page for more information about the consultation.
