Council acknowledges rejection of Australia Day Award

Byron Shire Council wishes to acknowledge that the Community Event of the Year, Nina’s 100th birthday, was not accepted by the recipients at Council’s Australia Day Awards ceremony on 25th January.

Mayor Michael Lyon, said the organisers of Nina’s 100th birthday chose not to accept the award during the awards ceremony as a form of protest against Australia Day.

“Every citizen has the right to protest and not accepting an award is a valid form of political protest,” the Mayor said.

“We acknowledge Nina’s 100th birthday as Byron Shire’s Community Event of the Year and that the organisers of the event chose not to accept the award,” he said.

About the Award for Community Event of the Year

One of Byron Bay’s most popular residents, Nina Mazri, celebrated her 100th birthday last year (2021) and the event was a true community celebration.

More than 200 people turned out to honour Nina and celebrate the joy of living, the benefits of engaging with your community, acknowledging the contribution of the elderly and the importance of remaining connected with family and friends, especially through the pandemic.

As Nina would say “Why walk through life when you can dance.”
