Public notice: Discoloured water in Emerald

Posted on January 7, 2022

Central Highlands Regional Council is aware of some cases of discoloured water in Emerald.

Water can become discoloured for several reasons including post-rain events, low/high water supply-demand and accumulated minerals in the water pipes. When accumulated material is disturbed, it can cause discoloured water through your tap.

Water utilities staff have also been flushing the water lines in identified affected areas and is investigating some long-term improvements.

As the water has undergone the complete disinfection process at the water treatment plant, water quality should not be affected.

Water quality is continuously monitored both automatically and manually across the region and it is possible that, from time to time, the water’s colour or appearance can change. Sometimes it can take on a yellow, rust or brown tint to almost black, other times it can appear milky white or blue.

If people notice discoloured water, please report it by contacting council on 1300 242 686.
