Council opened the lagoon entrance on the weekend to minimise the risk of flooding from the heavy rainfall.

Today Council has closed the entrance to enable the major sand clearance project to continue.

With smaller swell conditions and less rainfall predicted this week the entrance should be able to remain closed and works continue so the project is complete and the lagoon reopened on time for the summer holiday period.

With the forecast for the next couple of days predicting plenty of rain and a southerly swell, we have dug a pilot channel near the main channel at the entrance of Narrabeen Lagoon. The pilot channel will be opened when water levels in the lagoon get too high, to reduce the risk of flooding.

Digging a separate pilot channel rather than opening the main channel allows us to protect the continuing major sand clearance works. It will prevent sand from being dumped by waves onto the recently cleared entrance.

We are closely monitoring the depth of the lagoon and weather conditions. Once the rainfall event subsides, the channel and the lagoon will again be closed to ensure the major clearance works are not impacted and can continue.

Narrabeen Lagoon entrance was opened late Sunday night to reduce the risk of flooding.

With minimal rainfall forecast and lagoon levels dropped, the entrance was being closed again today (Monday) to allow the major sand clearance works to continue.

This project which has already removed around 20,000 cubic metres of sand from the lagoon and relocated it on Collaroy-Narrabeen Beach.

The current forecast for Sunday is for plenty of rain so we are closely monitoring conditions at Narrabeen Lagoon and preparing to open the lagoon entrance to reduce the risk of flooding to residents.

If required, we will open the lagoon just after the high tide on Sunday. The existing pilot channel and recent excavation works near the lagoon entrance will help facilitate a quick opening.

Once open, we will continue to monitor the lagoon depth and weather conditions with a view to closing the entrance as soon as the flood risk subsides so the major sand clearance project can continue.

This project involves dredging sand from the lagoon and relocating it to nourish Collaroy-Narrabeen Beach to allow the lagoon to stay open for longer periods. Around 20,000 cubic metres of sand already been moved from the lagoon to the beach. The project is on track to be complete in time for the summer holiday period.
