The Huon Valley Council is pleased to announce that the new 3km Port Huon to Geeveston Walking Track is now open.

The scenic walking track forms part of the improved pedestrian trails connecting the two towns. We thank the Australian Government for generously committing $1,250,000 through its Community Development Grants Program.

The track meanders through natural habitat, providing attractive views, a large wetland boardwalk, and a pedestrian bridge over the Kermandie River. Pedestrians are taken past the Port Huon Sports & Aquatic Centre and Sacred Heart Primary School and can take connecting footpaths through to Heritage Park.

Council would like to thank the local contractors who worked together with us to complete the walking track: DL & KL Gordon, Phillips Civil Contracting, L & S Doyle, Trent Lovell Excavations, Duggans, Rockit Asphalting, Drysdale Engineering, Flux Engineering, CM Concreting, Huon Aquaculture and VEC Civil Engineering.

The Port Huon to Geeveston Walking Track is aligned with the Huon Valley 2020 Community Plan 2015–2025 directive to enhance recreational opportunities within the Valley, develop multi-use tracks and trails and improve access along and to the river.

“The Port Huon to Geeveston Walking Track is an excellent asset for the Huon Valley community,” said Huon Valley Council Mayor Bec Enders. “We want our community to enjoy walking on the track and enjoy being close to our beautiful waterfront and existing sporting locations. We know that walking regularly encourages people to get out and about in the local area, to socialise and engage in a healthy activity.

“Many tourists are looking to do short walks in the area that they stay, and we believe that this walk will provide an extra drawcard for visitors to enjoy our beautiful part of the world,” said Cr Enders. “It provides another reason for people to stay longer in the Valley.”

Please note: The contractors working on the track have experienced unexpected delays with a section of the raised walkway from Port Huon Sports and Aquatic Centre to roughly opposite Doody’s Hill Road approximately 500 metres in length. Works will be completed in the coming weeks.
