Council has received funding under the NSW State Government’s Streets as Shared Spaces (SaSS) program to implement temporary or ‘pop-up’ footpath widening and public space improvements on Miller Street, North Sydney (between Pacific Highway and Berry Street).

The concept plan for this project has TfNSW approval and was endorsed by the Council on 22 March 2021.

The project includes the following:

wider/expanded footpaths, providing more room/improved access for pedestrians seating areas providing space for people to eat, wait, rest etc ‘giant’ pot plants and umbrellas providing shade and shelter from road areas a food truck vending parking spot (east side of Miller Street) and a public performance/small events space (west side of Miller Street) relocation of of one bus stop (west side of Miller St in front of Woolworths) approx. 60m south of the existing location view this plan showing the intended layout (3MB).

Changes to existing traffic and parking arrangements

The new pedestrian zone will be created by closing a portion of the traffic lane on the western side of Miller Street and extending the existing footpath. The changes to current traffic and parking arrangements, include:

all existing parking and loading zones along both sides of Miller Street (between Berry Street and Pacific Highway) will be re-purposed as footpath/public space areas and a substitute loading zone installed on the Pacific Highway motorists will not be able to turn left from the Pacific Highway (southbound) into Miller Street as the ‘slip lane’ will be closed to address pedestrian safety concerns and improve pedestrian accessibility bus stop will be relocated to the Pacific Highway end of the block to allow for the activation area

Access to existing driveways and construction areas will be maintained.

Installation

The project will be prefabricated offsite to enable it to ‘popup’ in a short period.

Installation is anticipated to commence 26 July 2021 and take one week total, separated into four shorter stages, with each to be completed and open for use before the next stage is commenced. Works will take place during off peak times to minimise the impact of the installation process.

Feedback

The project is proposed to be in place for six months subject to the project outcomes and community feedback.

Meetings

Ahead of commencement, Council held on-site meeting discussions with neighbouring property owners/businesses.
