Forty entries have been chosen to showcase Australia’s innovative jewellery and object practice in this year’s Contemporary Wearables ’21 Biennial Jewellery Award and Exhibition.

The pieces, which have been created by 39 artists around Australia, will be exhibited at Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery from September 4 to October 31, 2021.

Award winners and the pieces that have been chosen for acquisition will be announced at 5.30pm on Friday, September 3, 2021.

Toowoomba Region Mayor Paul Antonio said the Award was Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery’s contribution to promoting excellence in contemporary adornment in Australia.

Mayor Antonio said each of the pieces that had been chosen for the exhibition were eligible for awards and for acquisition in the Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery – Toowoomba City Collection.

“Toowoomba Regional Council is proud to continue its support for this prestigious biennial Award, which was established by the former Toowoomba City Council in 1989 with the aid of the Toowoomba Gallery Society Inc.,” Mayor Antonio said.

“The Gallery received an exceptional response from artists with more than 125 entries submitted from across Australia.

“The Award exhibition celebrates the innovation and craftmanship of artists and the pieces selected for display showcase the current trends of makers; some of them very much reflecting the concerns of today. I encourage everyone to visit the exhibition while it’s on display at Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery.

“Jurors had a difficult time selecting the Award and Exhibition pieces but managed to unanimously select 40 pieces for public display and judging.

“We are proud to support Australian artists with the prestigious Award and provide $15,000 for acquisitions to continue building one of the most cohesive surveys of contemporary jewellery and object practice in Australia.

“In addition to supporting the Award with acquisition funds, the Gallery presents $6000 to the Award winner, $3500 to the runner-up and $1500 for a Student award.”

Award winners will be selected by Barbara Heath, one of Australia’s leading contemporary jewellers and the appointed judge for 2021.

The entries for 2021 were juried by Dr Elizabeth Shaw, Contemporary Jeweller and Senior Lecturer, Head of Jewellery and Small Objects Department, Queensland College of Art, Griffith University; Marian Hosking, Contemporary Jeweller and former Head of Gold and Silversmithing Departments at both RMIT and Monash University and Dr Nicholas Bastin, Contemporary Jeweller and Lecturer Gold and Silversmithing, School of Art, RMIT University.
