These include the installation of a demountable canteen and hard shade structure, and an additional storage shed.

Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis said that the existing canteen at the Nightcliff Oval was decommissioned last year due to its age and cost of repair, which also resulted in a loss of storage space.

“It is important for Council to support improvements to our sporting venues so that community members can benefit from the facilities provided.

“Council is aware that these improvements will result in the removal of a number of trees and self-seeded vegetation. These were assessed by an arborist, with most recommended for removal due to poor health and providing limited amenity.

“A Landscaping Plan will be developed in conjunction with Council’s Parks team to replace the trees and vegetation removed with more suitable species that will provide additional spectator shade, contribute to cooling areas and provide habitat for wildlife,” said the Lord Mayor.

Nightcliff Cricket Club has been successful in obtaining $250,000 of funding through the Northern Territory Government’s (NTG) Community Benefit Fund and $60,000 from the City of Darwin Better Suburbs Projects funding, for the installation of a demountable canteen and hard shade structure.

The new storage shed is funded by an NTG Immediate Works Grant and Nightcliff Cricket Club funds, and should be completed in early June 2021.
