A shady shelter is on the way for passengers using the Victoria Street bus stop, outside of the Grand Central Shopping Centre.

Currently located across from the Toowoomba City Bowls Club, Toowoomba Regional Council’s (TRC) Infrastructure Committee Portfolio Leader Melissa Taylor said plans were in place to relocate the bus stop.

“We’re aware of the issues from the sun and the weather at the current location and have been working with all the stakeholders to address this matter,” Cr Taylor said.

“Since concerns were originally raised, Council has been working with Grand Central and the Department of Transport and Main Roads to assess the feasibility of relocating this bus stop to under the shelter of the Grand Central overbridge.

“While this may have seemed like an easy solution, safety concerns were also raised with reports of traffic failing to give way to pedestrians crossing the road at the traffic signals at the Grand Central speed ramp.

“It has taken some time to work through these matters and as such, we appreciate the public’s patience with this.

“We believe we have a solution with Council now undertaking works to relocate the bus stop to under the overbridge for better shelter and to install a centre median traffic island and traffic signals, to improve the visibility of the traffic signals at the speed ramp for southbound motorists.”

The new stop is expected to be completed by the end of April, weather permitting.

The project is jointly funded with the Department of Transport and Main Roads, Grand Central Shopping Centre and Toowoomba Regional Council.
