News: Construction Complete

New playground at Lake Mary Ann (Tingkkarli) for everyone to enjoy

Posted: Tuesday, 23 March 2021

The construction of the new playground at Lake Mary Ann (Tingkkarli) is now complete.

This playground is a jointly funded project with Tourism NT and Council’s Tennant Creek Local Authority. The $450,000 project includes a new undercover playground with soft-fall installed as well as upgraded shaded seating areas and undercover BBQ’s that will be installed in the coming months.

Lake Mary Ann is one of Council’s greatest assets in the Barkly Region. Not only is it the location for our biggest event of the year – Australia Day, it is a peaceful oasis for our residents to visit and one of the areas that tourists are sure to stop at when passing through the Barkly.

With the lake, picnic tables, BBQ’s and wide open spaces it is the ideal spot to visit, and now thanks to the joint funding from the Northern Territory Government and Council, children will have a great place to play. This is the first piece of infrastructure built from the $5.5m Turbo Charging Tourism funding from NTG.

Mayor Jeffrey McLaughlin remarked - "As the great philosopher Yusuf Islam (Cat Stevens) once said - Where do the children play? "

He continued, "they play at the dam, Lake Mary Ann, Tingkkarli, that's where they play."

Thank you to the Northern Territory Government and Tennant Creek Local Authority for funding this project.
