Sunday 7 March was a day to be remembered for women in the Shire of Coolgardie with the inaugural International Women’s Day event being held in Kambalda.

The free event was held at the Kambalda Community Recreation Facility and attendees were treated with refreshments, nibbles and two door prizes kindly donated by the Shire’s Recreation Facilities, not to mention an amazing line up of speakers.

The theme of this year’s International Women’s Day was ‘Choose To Challenge’ and the event saw five inspirational women from all walks of life speak about how they have chosen to challenge in their lives.

Well known community icon Gloria Moyle broke the ice and spoke to the many challenges she has overcome. Her presentation at times was confronting but in true Gloria style, was peppered with humour which had the audience in fits of laughter.

Dr Ann O’Neill presented a story that truly inspired attendees of how she survived tragic loss and now helps others in the area of victimization and trauma. There were moments of disbelief from the audience as she retold her amazing story.

Donna Shepherd, Chair of World Vision International Board took those in the room on a journey across the globe as she shared her experiences of helping women to establish micro businesses and support themselves in communities where this type of support is not readily available.

The final speakers for the afternoon were two local women - Glennis Bliss and Jay Stafford - both employees of Gold Field’s St Ives, who gave an insight to the experiences of women from two completely different eras in mining. With many years between them, their stories still echoed each other in terms of how women can be perceived in mining but also how far the industry has come in recognizing the value of women in this male dominated industry.

The afternoon concluded with a special opportunity for audience members to ask the panel of speakers questions, providing another chance for those in attendance to get further insights from the speakers.

The Shire of Coolgardie would like to thank Goldfields Women’s Health Care Centre and Gold Field’s St Ives for their continued support of female related initiatives.
