Ouyen Community Lake takes out local government award for excellence

The Ouyen community has done our municipality proud earning the Mildura Rural City Council area an LGPro Annual Award for Excellence for the Ouyen Community Lake project.

The project made Council one of just 10 local government areas across Victoria to receive an award, which was presented to the Ouyen Community Lake project team last night.

Mildura Mayor Jason Modica praised the Ouyen community for creating and driving the project, which has had a transformative impact on the town.

“The Ouyen Community Lake is an amazing community success story, transforming the former Grampians Wimmera Mallee Water (GWMWater) reservoir into a 14-hectare recreational boating and fishing lake,” Cr Modica said.

“It’s created a stunning recreational lake that can be enjoyed by Mallee residents year-round through a whole range of activities, providing a host of benefits for residents’ social and physical well-being.

“It also attracts visitors from surrounding towns and cities, serving as an economic driver for the town.

“This is something the Ouyen community should be extremely proud of as it was a project instigated and driven by the community, including countless hours of work and in-kind resources from local residents.”

The lake took out the Community Assets and Infrastructure Initiative – Projects $2.5 million and under category.

The project was led by a steering group including Ouyen Inc, GWMWater and Mildura Rural City Council, which provided expertise throughout the life of the initiative.
