Fremantle Council endorses new waste plan
City of Fremantle 25 Feb 2021

Fremantle Council has endorsed a new City of Fremantle Waste Plan that sets waste management priorities and targets for the next five years.

The state government requires all local councils in WA to prepare a waste plan which is consistent with the government’s Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery Strategy 2030.

The government’s Waste Strategy targets for 2030 include a 10 per cent reduction in Municipal Solid Waste generation, a 70 per cent resource recovery rate and zero littering and illegal dumping.

A key strategy for achieving the targets is for all local governments in the Perth and Peel region to have introduced the three-bin Food Organic Garden Organic (FOGO) system by 2025.

Fremantle Deputy Mayor Andrew Sullivan said the new Waste Plan would guide Fremantle’s progress towards the ultimate goal of zero waste.

“It makes a lot of sense to reduce waste and boost recycling because it’s not only better for the environment but also saves ratepayers’ money by reducing landfill costs,” Cr Sullivan said.

“The waste reduction targets in the WA government’s Waste Strategy align with those already set by the City through our One Planet strategy and our Strategic Community Plan.

“The City is well ahead of the game when it comes to waste management because we’ve already introduced FOGO to the majority of households, as well as offering free bulk waste and green waste verge pick-ups.

“We’ve also got a terrific Recycling Centre, our new Household Hazardous Waste facility and our Containers for Change refund point.

“The City of Fremantle is already in the top five of Perth’s best recyclers with 54 per cent of household waste diverted from landfill, and with the introduction of FOGO we expect to see our recovery rate improve even further.

“Over the next few years we’ll look to further improve by rolling out FOGO to more townhouses and apartments, expanding commercial waste services and reviewing the way we provide our bulk waste collection services.”

The City of Fremantle Waste Plan will now be submitted to the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation for final approval.
