Kambalda resident Chris Larkin’s tireless community service was formally recognised with a special Volunteer of the Year Award, announced at a morning tea hosted last month by the Kalgoorlie-Boulder Volunteer Centre.

Mr Larkin is a familiar face among Shire of Coolgardie residents in a dual role, delivering Meals on Wheels and as a loyal volunteer for St John Medical.

He originally lived in Kambalda for two years over 40 years ago and returned just under three years ago, making his mark throughout the area as a dedicated volunteer.

The philosophy behind what he does was a simple one - “To help out other people who need it and get to know more people in town,” he said.

Mr Larkin said he was “very honoured” and encouraged anyone thinking about becoming a volunteer to throw caution to the wind.

“Go for it,” he said. “You will get a lot of satisfaction out of it.”

Meals on Wheels services were initially launched in April, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic to assist seniors in making the transition into self-isolation.  Chris has been a valued addition to the delivery team.
