Advertisements PRIORITY WEED ALERT: GREEN CESTRUM

Residents are asked to keep an eye out for the Priority Weed Green cestrum (Cestrum parqui) in the Weddin Shire.

Green cestrum is a large shrub that is poisonous to people, pets, livestock and native animals. It contains a poison called ‘carboxyparquin’ that causes liver and brain damage, acting so quickly livestock can be found dead after as little as 24 hours. Green cestrum bushes are still toxic even after being cut down or sprayed.

Green cestrum was introduced from South America as an ornamental plant. It has become a weed in NSW, QLD, VIC and SA. It grows in a wide range of soil types and rainfall as well as being frost tolerant. It can outcompete other vegetation and reduces food and shelter for native animals.

If you see this weed in the Weddin Shire, please contact Council’s Weeds Department via Ph: (02) 6343 1212 or Email:

Further information on Green cestrum is available on the DPI website https://weeds.dpi.nsw.gov.au/Weeds/GreenCestrum

PRIORITY WEED ALERT: COOLATAI GRASS

Residents are asked to keep an eye out for the Priority Weed Coolatai grass (Hyparrhenia herta) in the Weddin Shire.

Coolatai grass is an invasive drought, fire & herbicide tolerant tussock. It is a summer active plant that can grow up to 2m and produce thousands of tiny stick seeds, readily invading and dominating an area to form a dense monoculture. Coolatai grass can grow in many different soil types and under varied climate conditions.

The greatest problem with this invasive species is the lack of early detection and management. Grasses are particularly difficult because they look innocuous and rarely raise land manager’s attention until the species is well established.

If you see this weed in the Weddin Shire, please contact Council’s Weeds Department via Ph: (02) 6343 1212 or Email:

Further information on Coolatai grass is available on the DPI website https://weeds.dpi.nsw.gov.au/Weeds/Details/179
