2021 Australia Day Awards closing soon

Published on 24 September 2020

There is just under a month left to nominate someone for a 2021 Australia Day Award.

Australia Day celebrates all the things we love about Australia: our land, people, sense of a 'fair go', lifestyle, democracy, and the freedoms we enjoy.

The Australia Day Awards allow communities to recognise those who make a special effort in their everyday life to better Broken Hill.

Council is currently accepting nominations for Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, and Senior Citizen of the Year.

Deputy Mayor and Australia Day Advisory Group Chair, Christine Adams, said the recent hardship caused by the COVID-19 pandemic made the Awards more important than ever.

"Everybody has been doing it tough these past six months, so I think it's important to stop and celebrate our community and the people who make it so special," she said.

"If you know someone who works hard for Broken Hill and to improve our lives out here in the bush, be sure to nominate them to give them the recognition they deserve."

As for the Awards ceremony itself, Cr Adams said Council's events staff would plan a celebration in line with whatever COVID-19 restrictions are in place early in the new year.

"Staff will be able to get a better idea of what the event will look like in the coming months," she said.

"Hopefully things will have improved by then and we can have our normal ceremony, but if there are still complications we'll find a way to ensure our nominees get the recognition they deserve.”

Those wishing to make a nomination can find forms at https://www.brokenhill.nsw.gov.au/Council/Forms/Australia-Day-Awards-nomination. Nominations must be received no later than 11.59pm on Tuesday, October 20, 2020.
