Plans to refurbish the Millmerran Aquatic Centre will be reviewed following a decision made by Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) at the Ordinary Meeting of Council on 18 August 2020.

After seeking tenders for the refurbishment of the 50 metre pool and changerooms, TRC Environment and Community Committee Chair Councillor James O’Shea said it had become obvious that more work was needed on the facility than had previously been anticipated.

“Council allocated $2.45 million in this year’s budget for a refurbishment however after all tender submissions were over Council’s estimate, it has been decided that it would be in the community’s best interest to not accept any tenders and reconsider the best model moving forward,” he said.

“The original facility was built almost 60 years ago and while we’ve been able to complete minor renovations up until now, this simply is no longer an option.

“Built in the 1960s, the pool shell, expansion joints, plumbing, drainage and pipes have been assessed by an independent engineer as having reached the end of their useable lifecycle.

“Council was excited about undertaking the work this year and I understand the residents of Millmerran will be disappointed with Council’s decision to temporarily delay the refurbishment, and that the re-opening date will now likely be pushed back considerably, but this is a big financial investment and it’s important we talk to the community to get this right.

“While it’s not the outcome Council had originally planned for, this does provide us with a real opportunity to look at what is the best fit for Millmerran.

“We know the current model was the best type of facility for the community when it was built in the 1960s but we need to make sure we get it right for this generation and future generations.

“This could be in the form of a heated facility or an indoor pool or a different option altogether. An indoor heated facility would provide an opportunity to extend the swimming season further into the year rather than just in the warmer months.

“At this point, nothing has been decided on what the best model is, which is why we will be undertaking targeted consultation with the community.

“Council is committed to providing a variety of aquatic centres throughout the Region.”
