Coastal infrastructure rebuild continues Wednesday 01 July

Coastal infrastructure that enhances the visitor experience and provides vantage points to enjoy the breathtaking views of Mallacoota and beyond are progressively being reestablished following the summer’s bushfires.

The elevated and ground level Point Difficult and Geology Point elevated lookouts have been completed, including a new access handrail. The Betka Beach Lookout is nearing completion and will offer substantial improvements in durability and bushfire resistance provided by hardwood timbers.

East Gippsland Shire Council General Manager Assets and Environment Fiona Weigall said Council was using a successful implementation model of local trades, suppliers, and consultation with the community.

“The projects have used new decking material with some recycled plastic that offers slip resistance and proven durability in coastal conditions,” Ms Weigall said.

“Working the community, we have also been able to salvage all galvanised balustrades from the platforms and lookouts, which are being utilized to reconstruct the coastal assets. All will be treated and re-galvanised to ensure the finished outcome looks great.”

Works have also nearing completion at Airport Cove, Fisherman’s Point, Secret Beach and Poachers Point.

Ms Weigall said works have been overseen by project manager Peter Biggs, who is based in Mallacoota on secondment as part of Council’s partnership with the City of Melbourne.

Council has already reconstructed sections of damaged boardwalk as part of its asset rebuild in the town. Planning and materials procurement is well advanced for the remaining section adjacent Lakeside Drive and works will commence in August.

“Council is not responsible for all coastal infrastructure and walking tracks but is working with the community and other agencies to ensure these are available for the community and visitors as soon as possible,” Ms Weigall said.
