Shire of Ashburton Council have pledged their commitment to the Pilbara Trails Strategy at June’s Ordinary Meeting of Council endorsing the provision of financial support for the next stage of the masterplan.

The Pilbara Trails Strategy follows the guidance set out by the WA Strategic Trails blueprint that provides for the coordinated planning, development and management of quality trails and trail experiences across Western Australia.

Shire President Kerry White said that this was a fantastic opportunity to further enhance the Shire across the region.

“In supporting trails strategy, we will be working collaboratively will neighbouring local governments, our tourism partners and local aboriginal organisations” said Councillor White.

“Council recognises the economic and tourism benefit from being part of this program, and considers the development of trails in our region a valuable tourist attraction as well as an opportunity for tourists and our community to experience the unique landscape and natural amenities on our doorstep.

“Ashburton boasts significant trails that form part of the Warlu Way such as Onslow’s boardwalk, Karijini National Park and Millstream Chichester National Park.

“The provision of trails in our area provides facilities for recreation that is accessible to many different groups in our community, while fostering an improved awareness and appreciation of our natural, cultural and historic environment sustainable access routes.

 “By incorporating our existing trails and any potential newly identified trails through the Pilbara Trails Advisory Group, there is huge opportunity enhance visitor experience in our region and to leverage our Shire on a regional, intrastate and international trails network that is supported by the strategy.

“I am optimistic that the stage one of the process will determine a clear plan for immediate opportunities and future processes required to advance trail development for Ashburton.

“The report from the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries is expected later this year and this will determine a timeframe for the strategy and realisation of the trails concept.
