A collaborative effort between the City of Wanneroo and Vinnies WA will enable local residents to access food hampers during these challenging times.

Vinnies WA reported an increase in the demand for food support since the beginning of March due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In response to the increase, a new model of providing support was established and food hampers were distributed to those in need.

The successful initiative has now been extended to those living in the City of Wanneroo where vulnerable residents or those experiencing financial hardship can request a food hamper.

Vinnies WA Executive Manager of Member & Volunteer Services, Andrew York said many people in the community are being affected by disruptions caused by COVID-19 and accessing basic needs such as food was becoming a challenge for some.

“Being able to provide emergency food relief, even in the form of a hamper left at the door, can keep an individual or even a family going for up to a week,” he said.

Food hampers are packed at the Vinnies Canning Vale Distribution Centre and delivered to a hub in Wanneroo, ready to be distributed to residents by City volunteers.

“The initiative is a great partnership that will really benefit our community and provide additional support to those who need it most,” said Wanneroo Mayor Tracey Roberts.

“Having our City volunteers involved in delivering these hampers really demonstrates the unity we have in our community and together I know we will make a real difference to the lives of our vulnerable community members.”

Residents who would like to request a hamper should contact the Vinnies WA call centre on 1300 794 054. Deliveries will commence on Thursday 18 June.

The program is initially due to run for three months with the possibility of extension based on demand over the coming weeks.
