Small steps celebrated in return to city’s cultural life

Published on 04 June 2020

In a small but significant milestone in the gradual return to normal life, the City of Hobart will host its first post-COVID cultural event this Friday evening.

An intimate audience will enjoy an outdoor cinema experience hosted by The Loop: A Digital Art Platform for Hobart, with a free, public screening of highlights from the We Are One global film festival.

“The Stage 2 easing of restrictions means we are once again able to gather at this very special outdoor cinema, albeit in small numbers for now,” Community, Culture and Events Committee Chair Cr Zelinda Sherlock said.

“With physical distancing still required, it’s limited to just 20 attendees – but this is still a milestone for our cultural identity.

“Our enjoyment of Hobart’s usually vibrant cultural life has been severely impacted by COVID-19. But the arts sector has stayed active and there have been incredible acts of generosity as creatives turn to online platforms to share their work, messages of hope and togetherness.”

We Are One is a historic film event that is described as a powerful example of the global film community coming together to share inspirational films in the face of many film festivals being cancelled worldwide.

With the likes of Sundance, Tribeca and Sydney Film Festival participating, We Are One has a stellar line-up of films, shorts, documentaries and animations from around the world. Anyone who missed out on Friday’s screening can watch it for free on You Tube until 7 June. Visit weareoneglobalfestival.com for details.

This Friday’s screening is presented by the City of Hobart in partnership with The University of Tasmania. Admission is free but ticketed, with a maximum of 20 attendees.

There will be a maximum capacity of 20-people in the outdoor courtyard space of The Loop and Covid-safe measures will be in place for those attending. More information at theloophobart.com.au.
