Post reporter to guest judge on Claremont writing competition

The Post Newspaper’s David Cohen is joining the Town of Claremont as a special guest judge on their inaugural creative writing competition.

David will join Councillor Bruce Haynes, poet Annette Ryan, and author Bindy Pritchard to judge Write On, a poetry and flash fiction competition for all ages.

Mayor Jock Barker said David’s experience will bring an extra dimension to the competition.

“David is well-known as the Claremont reporter for the Post Newspaper. He knows our community like the back of his hand, and his writing portfolio really is something to be admired. With his experience as a judge for the WA Media Awards, David is an exciting addition to Write On,” Mayor Barker said.

“We now have a journalist, a poet, an author, and an academic writer on our competition judging panel – which I’m sure will make for a lively discussion!”

Write On challenges Claremont locals to flex their creative muscles on a piece of writing that explores what it means to be connected.

There are three age groups: 10 and under, 11 to 17, and 18+, with a first and second prize in each age group across both poetry and flash fiction.

As well as winning entries being published in the next edition of the Town’s Flourish magazine, first and second prize winners will share a prize pool of $2,100 in vouchers for local Claremont businesses.

“Now is a crucial time to support our local businesses, so we’re thrilled to be able to offer $2,100 in vouchers that will help keep our local economy going strong,” Mayor Barker added.

Write On is open to Claremont residents and ratepayers, as well as people who study at schools in Claremont’s catchment area. Entries close on Tuesday 30 June.
