Shire provides financial relief to those in need

As well as posing significant health risks, COVID-19 has and will continue to have a major impact on businesses and the economy.

At a Special Meeting of Council on Tuesday, 5 May 2020 the Shire of Coolgardie announced that eligible ratepayers can apply for financial hardship consideration. Ratepayers will be required to display evidence of hardship which can include, but is not limited to, recent unemployment or under-employment, sickness or recovery from sickness, low income or loss of income, or unanticipated circumstances such as caring for and supporting extended family.

“The Shire is committed to ensuring that we offer fair, equitable, consistent and dignified support to ratepayers suffering hardship, while treating all members of the community with respect and understanding at this difficult time,” said Shire President Malcolm Cullen.

If a ratepayer meets the Financial Hardship Criteria and enters into a payment arrangement, they may qualify for reduced interest charges. Deferment of rates may also apply for ratepayers who have a Pensioner Card, State Concession Card or Seniors Card and Commonwealth Seniors Health Care Card registered on their property.

In addition to the financial hardship provisions, Council committed to a 0% on the dollar increase on this coming financial year’s rates and also a 0% increase on fees and charges. 

“We recognise that this is a tough time for many, and we want to support our community as best we can. By offering financial hardship provisions and minimising any increase on rates, we hope to provide some relief to our community. We’re all in this together,” said Cr Cullen.
