Liverpool City Council has been provided an extension of the lease on its Liverpool Animal Shelter until 19 July 2020 and is currently investigating a permanent site in the Local Government Area.

The shelter had been set to close on 19 March 2020 due to the impending sale of the land it operates on in Austral. The existing shelter has operated on privately owned land under a lease arrangement since late 2016 after the previous service provider closed.

Council resolved at its second February meeting to seek to extend the lease and look for a new home for the shelter in Liverpool.

“Finding a new home for the animal shelter in Liverpool is a significant challenge but this extension has provided more time for the search,” Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller said.

“We know many of our residents want the shelter to continue to be based in Liverpool and we are working to identify suitable sites.”

Council urges residents to ensure their pets are microchipped and registered with up-to-date contact information. Residents are encouraged to contact Council on 1300 36 2170 or visit www.petregistry.nsw.gov.au.

Council will shortly be announcing details of its discount pet desexing program in May, which will be available for holders of pension and healthcare cards.
