Shire President Health Update - COVID-19 (Coronavirus)

Kambalda Aquatic Facility Grand Opening Event

Following on from my update on the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) published on Saturday, 14 March 2020, the Shire is continuing to monitor information about the virus being provided through a range of health providers and government agencies.

The Shire of Coolgardie would like to advise our community and stakeholders that we have made the extremely difficult decision to postpone the Kambalda Aquatic Facility Grand Opening Event scheduled for Sunday, 29 March 2020.

On Friday, the Chief Medical Advisor for Australia, Brendan Murphy, advised both State and Federal Governments at the COAG meeting to ban any mass gatherings of over 500 people as of Monday, 16 March 2020.

At a National and State level, an immediate response occurred to prevent gatherings at events including the cancellation of Formula One, no spectators at AFL and NBL finals playoff.

We have now seen decisions to ban mass gatherings extend to local events with small non-profit organisations forced to make heartbreaking decisions to cancel events such as the Kalgoorlie Community Fair and the Goldfields Children Charity Ball.

As the Kambalda Aquatic Facility Grand Opening Event is anticipated to attract over 500 people and intended to be an opening for the entire community - not just a select few, this decision has not been made lightly.

The Shire Councillors and staff are very aware that the opening of the Kambalda Aquatic Facility for public use has been long awaited by the community.

The Kambalda Aquatic Facility is currently in final testing and certification phases which includes lifeguard training under controlled conditions consistent with current health advice.

We will continue to inform the community on the status of all Shire business in a timely and transparent manner.

Regards,

Malcolm Cullen, Shire President
