Wembley Golf Course re-opens Tuart Course in wake of scrub fire

The Wembley Golf Course has re-opened the full 18 holes of its Tuart Course, but the front nine holes of the Old Course will remain closed for the remainder of the day (Thursday, 12 March).

Emergency fire crews have remained on-site to attend to ember remnants of a scrub fire that occurred at 4:30am this morning, along Empire Avenue in Wembley Downs.

Town of Cambridge Mayor Keri Shannon thanked the Emergency Services and the Town’s Golf Course (WGC) staff for their swift response to attending the fire.

“The WGC staff responded professionally and activated the Course Emergency Management Plan and the fire crews were there within minutes of the fire starting this morning”, she said.

“Fire trucks were able to easily access the Golf Course irrigation system via fire hydrants installed when the system was previously upgraded, which was invaluable.”

“As the fire was contained within the natural bushland in the northern section of the Course there was no damage to any buildings or infrastructure. Also, it was thankful that no one was injured.

“The fire was first seen this morning by one of the Course’s Green Keepers who immediately called 000.

It is anticipated that the Old Course will be fully operational on Friday, 13 March and open for play from 6:00am.
