A well-deserved thank you for everyone who protected our community this bush fire season

Cessnock City Council will host an event to thank all volunteers and personnel who did outstanding work to protect the Cessnock Local Government Area (LGA) during the recent bush fires.

Following a Mayoral Minute at the most recent meeting of Council, the decision was unanimous that a special event should be organised to acknowledge the special people in our community.

Our region experienced a highly active 2019/20 fire season, particularly in the areas of North Rothbury, Greta, Pelaw Main, Laguna, Wollombi and Bucketty, which had a significant impact on the community.

The 14 RFS Brigades across the Cessnock LGA worked tirelessly to protect our community during this time and Cessnock City Mayor, Councillor Bob Pynsent said we need to show our support and gratitude.

“These volunteers put their own lives at risk to help others and receive very little in return for doing so. Their swift action meant fires were downgraded quickly and homes were saved.”

“I saw their tremendous community spirit shine though first hand and I know how appreciative affected community members are of their service.”

“This event is an opportunity for Council to officially recognise the outstanding contribution in what were horrendous weather conditions,” added Cr Pynsent.

The event will be held before 30 June 2020 and will be funded by the joint NSW and Commonwealth Government Bushfire Community Resilience and Economic Recovery Funds: Phase 1.
