Hobart fuel reduction burns program in Waterworks Reserve

Published on 31 March 2020

The City of Hobart plans to carry out an 18.7-hectare fuel reduction burn in Waterworks Reserve on Wednesday 1 April 2020.

Weather permitting, the fuel reduction burn will take place between Huon Road and the two reservoirs (see map below). These reservoirs are an integral part of Hobart’s water supply.

The burn will reduce flammable material on the forest floor and help protect nearby houses from potential bushfires during next summer’s bushfire season.

It is expected there will be some smoke produced, but all care will be taken to minimise its impact on nearby areas.

Residents with health or breathing conditions, which may be made worse by smoke, have been asked to implement their health action plan and to avoid smoke where possible.

Autumn’s cooler months are the best time to carry out low-intensity, controlled fuel reduction burns in our bushlands. The City of Hobart carries out fuel reduction burns in autumn to guard against bushfires next summer.
