2020 Local Government Elections

Queensland’s next local government quadrennial elections will be held on Saturday, 28 March 2020.  Elections will be held for mayors and councillors across Queensland's 77 councils.

Candidate nominations will be open until 12:00 PM (midday) on Tuesday, 3 March 2020.

Nominations for candidates (including candidates who are members of a group) must be lodged on the approved nomination forms, which can be accessed:

Completed nomination forms can be submitted online via the Self Service Portal or can be lodged with the Returning Officer responsible for the local government area being contested or the ECQ head office, in person or by post. Candidate details will be published on the ECQ website.

New requirements apply for candidates, political parties, third party campaigners and political donors for the 2020 local government elections. For example, a candidate intending to nominate must complete mandatory training and open a dedicated campaign bank account.
