COUNCIL NEWS 19 FEBRUARY 2020

The big news of the week was that the Henry Lawson Festival has been reactivated. A meeting was held at the Grenfell Bowling Club on Wednesday, 12 February 2020 attended by approximately 80-100 community members with all executive positions filled. There was real passion, desire and determination to keep the festival going with all in attendance very positive about the festival’s future.

There was a festival meeting held last night to commence planning the event which is great as the new committee is wasting no time in organizing the event to be held in June 2020.

The meeting was very successful in that all executive positions were filled which are detailed below:

Assistant Secretary – Cathy Gilbert

Treasurer – Amanda Protheroe

Assistant Treasurer – Ray Smith

Co-ordinators positions will need to be considered by the new committee and indications are that there is a lot

of interest there as well. Congratulations to members of the executive and to the co-ordinators who will take

on various roles. Thank you very much for giving freely of your time to undertake your respective portfolios

and all the very best for the 2020 Henry Lawson Festival.

The establishment of Service NSW is ensuring the services remain in the Weddin Shire which is terrific. The services remaining at the Council Chambers also enhances Council’s long term sustainability and will assist us to remain as Weddin Shire Council in the long term. Youth Week is fast approaching and will be held from 1-9 April 2020. This year, the NSW Youth Week theme is: Speak up. Be involved. Get connected. Have fun.

To celebrate NSW Youth Week this year, the Office of the Advocate for Children and Young People (ACYP) is inviting young people between 12 and 24 years of age to enter the NSW Youth Week Design Competition. Designs can include drawings, paintings, photographs and digital illustrations. It’s not about being a good artist, it’s about young people showing what inspires them. The NSW Government has announced funding for the first year’s increase of the Emergency Services Levy (ESL) for all local councils.

The increase in the levy, attributed to the new worker’s compensation arrangements for firefighters, which is payable by Council for the 2019-20 financial year amounts to $41,604.

The Government has also announced that it is exploring options to better manage the impacts of the ESL on councils budgeting cycles. Councils will be kept informed of progress.

Member for Cootamundra the Hon Steph Cooke MP is calling on landholders and primary producers across the region to nominate as a candidate in the 2020 Local Land Services (LLS) board member elections. Nominations close 28 February 2020. For more information visit www.lls.nsw.gov.au

The Grenfell Lions Club together with the Drought Ride/Beat the Breakdown will be holding a “Forget the Drought Day” on Sunday, 23 February at 12 noon – 4 pm. The afternoon will be held at the Historic Railway Station and Lions Park. The event is free for everyone and there will be a sausage sizzle, drinks, jumping castles, face painting and live music. Lions will also be holding a car boot sale/market day in aid of Children’s Cancer Research.

The current exhibition at the Grenfell Art Gallery is “Delight in Diversity” by Grenfell Artists Incorporated. This group of enthusiastic artists gather each week at the Rose Street rooms. They work creatively on a wide variety of artistic endeavours in various media ranging from graphite, pencil, pen and ink, pastel, watercolour, acrylics and oils. Several members of the highly regarded art group have had successes in local, district and state art exhibitions.

The Art Gallery is open Monday to Friday 10am - 4pm, Saturday 10am - 3pm & Sunday 10am -2pm.

The next movie to be screened at the Grenfell Cinema will be ‘Ford vs Ferrari” on Saturday, 14 March, 2020 at 8pm. Please see the adjacent advertisement for further details.

POSITION VACANT – TEAM LEADER FINANCE

Council is inviting applications from motivated and enthusiastic persons to fill the position of Team Leader Finance in Council’s Organisational Structure.

Appointment to the position will be in accordance with the Local Government (State) Award 2017.
