Donation to Bushfire Appeal

Published on 20 January 2020

The City of Busselton, along with many other Local Governments across Australia, has responded to the unprecedented bushfires in the Eastern States by donating to several bushfire relief funds. Council has agreed to donate to six disaster relief funds recommended by the Western Australian Local Government Association.  These being:

Australian Red Cross Disaster Relief and Recovery Fund St Vincent De Paul Vinnies Bushfire Appeal Salvation Army Disaster Appeal Victorian Bushfire Appeal Kangaroo Island Mayor’s Relief and Recovery Bushfire Fund Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal Disaster Resilience and Recovery Fund

Each fund will receive $1000, which when combined with other Western Australian Local Government contributions, will certainly benefit those in need.

City of Busselton Mayor Grant Henley said that while many people will have made personal donations to various funds, it’s important that we acknowledge the gravity of the situation and respond collectively as a community.

“Council is confident that community members will support a contribution to this cause from our municipal funds. A $6000 donation is not excessive but it is worthwhile. If all WA Councils pledge similar amounts, and I am confident that many will, the Local Government sector will have gone a long way to helping residents, businesses, emergency response volunteers and the Australian wildlife which has been so gravely impacted.

There are many towns in rural and regional areas across the Eastern States that have been decimated by these fires and we are certainly not immune to similar threats here in the South West.  Council has donated these funds on behalf of the community because we believe it is the right thing to do.  We have also supported the fundraising activities of many local groups similarly moved to act in the face of such devastation.”

The City of Busselton reminds residents and visitors to comply with all fire notices and remain bushfire vigilant this summer. Visit www.dfes.wa.gov.au or www.emergency.wa.gov.au for information on bushfire preparation and to view current warnings and incidents.

The Objectives out lined in this media release are aligned to Key Goal Area 1 in the City of Busselton’s Strategic Community Plan (Review 2019): Our community is welcoming, friendly and healthy.
