Thursday, January 16, 2020, 5:30 – 10pm In celebration of the 2020 Australian Youth Water Polo Championships, Kailum Graves’ Data Rock (Take Me Somewhere Nice) will be projected onto the William Jolly Bridge from 11-20 January, 5:30–10pm nightly. Data Rock (Take Me Somewhere Nice) is a series of abstract landscapes created by sequentially copying the colour of every pixel in six 100px x 100px images and pasting it successively to create entirely new images from the sampled pixels. Kailum Graves uses photography and photographic documentation to generate abstract architectures of data and lived experience. His use of the grid and self-similar pattern structures express a tension between the individual and the collective, similarly found within the pool during a water polo match. Kailum is an emerging artist who has exhibited internationally and nationally, including at the National Portrait Gallery, Canberra; participating in international exhibitions in London, Venice, Rio de Janeiro, and an international conference in Mexico City; undertaken a residency in Iceland; won the 2016 Clayton Utz Art Award; and has been acquired into the Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery’s permanent collection. The 2020 Australian Youth Water Polo Championships are on from 11 – 23 January at venues across Brisbane.
