New location for Australia Day 2020 celebrations

Australia Day 2020 is shaping up to be a great community event for the entire family. This year, for the first time ever, the Cessnock Performing Arts Centre (CPAC) is hosting the Citizenship Ceremony and Australia Day Awards.

We have two days of FREE activities for everyone with the fun kicking off on Friday 24 January at CPAC with a screening of Muriel’s Wedding. Make sure you grab a seat by 6:30pm.

On Sunday 26 January from 10am until 12noon we will welcome Australia’s newest citizens with a Citizenship Ceremony and recognise those in our community who go above and beyond in the Australia Day Awards. You’ll also be able to enjoy a free BBQ breakfast between 8am and 10am in the courtyard outside of CPAC (Castlemaine St, Cessnock).

After the official proceedings sport lovers can head off to the fourth annual Mayor’s Cup Twenty20 Cricket Match and see local players battle it out on the pitch at East End Oval. Don’t forget to grab your zinc and a hat in case it’s a scorcher.

Those looking to cool down and enjoy a splash will be able to head to the Cessnock and Branxton Pools for FREE between 10am and 4pm. Remember, all of our events are strictly alcohol free.

Cessnock City Mayor, Councillor Bob Pynsent is looking forward to the celebrations and said it’s a wonderful opportunity for all residents to get involved in a community event. “What a fantastic few days we have planned to celebrate this great country we live in. A citizenship ceremony on Australia Day is always extra special.”

Council would also like to acknowledge the East Cessnock Bowling Club for their support in hosting the celebrations in the past. Come along to a fantastic weekend of family friendly events and celebrate what makes Cessnock such a special place to live. Share your Australia Day moments by tagging photos on Facebook and Twitter with #AustraliaDay and #Cessnock.
