Progress on museum upgrade
Town of Claremont 19 Dec 2019
A Notice of Motion to assure the Town’s residents that the proposed building envelope for Freshwater Bay Museum will not encroach on Mrs Herberts Park has been endorsed by Council the final Ordinary Council Meeting of 2019.

Mayor Jock Barker supported the motion and said there had been “some concerns about the purpose and extent of the museum upgrade”.

“To alleviate resident concerns, Council agreed to formally request the Minister for Lands to revise the existing boundaries to include the museum buildings (current and proposed) and secure the remaining parkland as A Class Reserve,” Mayor Barker said.

“It was never the Town’s intention to encroach on parkland, nor is there any commercial element to the proposed upgrade to the museum.”

The museum upgrade was proposed as part of Town’s Freshwater Bay Museum Future Directions 2016-2021 plan after extensive consultation – including the museum’s advisory committee and volunteers, local teachers and other community members – showed support for the concept of improvements to the amenity of the site.

The proposed project aims to provide a facility that will support learning opportunities relating to our local heritage and culture for our community through programs, exhibitions and presentations.

A steering group, which includes members of the community and Town officers, was established at the Ordinary Council Meeting on 3 September 2019.    The steering group has been reviewing the project and its elements, including: •             the location of buildings within the project and Mrs Herberts Park; •             the function and design of buildings; •             integration of new and existing facilities; •             retention or replacement of other public facilities (such as the public toilets); •             accessibility, parking and transport; •             maintaining mature trees and canopy; and •             colours, designs and other issues that may arise during this process.   The steering group are working together to create a design concept and community feedback will be invited in February / March 2020.
