Play it safe by the water this summer

Whether you’re swimming, surfing, skiing, boating or surf fishing, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the water during the festive season holidays.

Corangamite Shire Mayor Neil Trotter encouraged residents to play it safe in the water this summer.

“We have some terrific beaches and lakes for recreation and water sports, but everyone has a responsibility to look after their own safety and the safety of others,” Cr Trotter said.

“I would encourage everyone to take appropriate care so they can go home to their families safely.

“Swim between the red and yellow flags at a patrolled location where possible and supervise children at all times around water.

“Stay within arm’s distance of very small children because circumstances can change in a matter of seconds, particularly in the surf.”

Cr Trotter recommended checking conditions and forecasts, and choosing locations that suit your swimming ability and fitness.

“Stay out of the water if you have been drinking alcohol because it affects your swimming ability and judgement of dangerous situations,” he advised.

“If you think someone’s judgement is impaired, speak up and make sure they don’t do anything unsafe.”

Cr Trotter also reminded pool and spa owners that new State regulations came into effect this month relating to safety fences.

“These new regulations apply to permanent pools, above ground pools, indoor pools, hot tubs, bathing or wading pools and relocatable pools more than 300 mm deep,” he said.

Life Saving Victoria recommends always swimming with a friend, learning how to spot and avoid rip currents, and knowing CPR.
