Council is seeking feedback from residents and road users who travel on Cawthorns Lane, Macquarie Plains on a proposal to reduce the speed limit from 80 km/h to 60 km/h. The proposed speed reduction is for the length of the road, between Gordon River Road and Lyell Highway.

Council has received numerous complaints about accidents caused by speed and single-vehicle accidents with vehicles leaving the road and sometimes going through fences. In addition there are concerns about excessive dust created by fast paced vehicle movements. Research tells us that even small reductions of 10 km/h in travelling speeds can lead to significant reduction in incidents.

Ultimately the decision of altering the speed limit rests with the Transport Commissioner who will weigh up a number of considerations including public feedback, crash history, traffic volumes, roadside development, types of motorist, impact to travel times and other safety improvement measures to be implemented etc. Speed limit management is about meeting an acceptable compromise across a wide range of objectives and a diverse group of road users and communities. Safe and efficient travel is the cornerstone to a healthy and prosperous society.

Have your say. Council is seeking feedback from road users who travel on Cawthorns Lane about the proposed speed limit changes and any safety concerns. To have your say in support or opposition to the proposal, written feedback can be emailed to [email protected] or marked 'Attention Jess Dallas' and sent to Derwent Valley Council, PO BOX 595, New Norfolk 7140.

Feedback must be received by close of business on 7 February 2020.

How will Council use your feedback? Council will consider feedback and insights provided by road users in the application to the Transport Commissioner to reduce the speed limit. The Commissioners decision will be posted on Council’s website when known.
