City of Darwin is again supporting Foodbank NT’s Annual Food Drive by encouraging the Darwin community to donate non-perishable food items to help those in need enjoy Christmas this year.

Foodbank NT’s annual Christmas Hamper Food Drive is open until Sunday 1 December, with City of Darwin accepting donations to close of business Friday 29 November.

All donated items will be packaged into Christmas hampers for distribution in the lead up to Christmas Day.

Acting Lord Mayor Simon Niblock said Christmas is a particularly difficult time of year for people in our community who are struggling financially.

“Christmas is a time to celebrate with family and friends, so for people in our community who are unable to afford those extras we all buy at this time of year, it can be a very stressful time.”

“By supporting Foodbank NT’s Food Drive we hope to bring some joy to people in need at Christmas time.”

“This is a fantastic initiative and I’d like to invite the people of Darwin make a donation, no matter how small, to this worthy cause.”

Foodbank NT’s Acting CEO, Peter Chandler said he was thankful for the support the organisation received from businesses across Darwin.

“We could not deliver the much-needed services that we do without the support of organisations like City of Darwin,” he said.

“Throughout the year the demand to provide food has increased dramatically; it is a very troubling trend.”

“Christmas is a time for giving and we really appreciate the generosity of the Darwin community, without whom we could not provide our services.”

Any non-perishable food item can be donated including canned foods, long-life milk, biscuits, cereals, pasta and condiments. Typical Christmas pantry items are also very welcome including tinned ham, shortbread biscuits and other festive snacks.

Food donation bins can be found at the Civic Centre Darwin, Nightcliff, Casuarina and Karama Libraries. Donations can be made at these locations until COB Friday 29 November.
