Driving the switch from single-use plastics

Published: 14 Nov 2019

Council will strengthen its work to reduce single-use plastics and further support local businesses to transition to reusable or compostable products by becoming a Founding Partner of the Cairns Plastic Free Places program.

Plastic Free Places targets cafes, food outlets and event organisers to switch from single-use plastic takeaway items, such as straws, cutlery, coffee cups and lids, containers, bags and water bottles.

The Boomerang Alliance has been contracted by the Queensland Government to deliver the Plastic Free Place program in Cairns during 2020, following the success of the program in centres including Noosa, Byron Bay, Adelaide and Perth.

The initiative supports Council’s work to deliver a wide education campaign to reduce waste and single-use plastics in the broader community.

As a Foundation Partner, Council will:

Promote and inform stakeholders about the projectFacilitate collection services that support plastic free practices and advise on organics processingCollaborate on opportunities to develop future programs and services that enhance effectiveness of the project andLook for opportunities to review internal policy and practices that reduce Council’s plastics footprint and demonstrate leadership by example.
