2019 Local Government Ordinary Elections

The Shire of York’s Ordinary Election was held on Saturday 19 October 2019.

For the first time, the Shire election was conducted as a postal vote election by the Western Australian Electoral Commission.   The turnout rate was 42.6%, which is a 15.75% increase on the turnout rate for the previous election in 2017.

Two new and two re-elected Shire of York Councillors completed their declaration of office prior to the Special Council Meeting held on Monday 21 October 2019 by Freeman of the Shire, Mr Gordon Marwick JP.

The Shire welcomes new Councillors Stephen Muhleisen and Ashley Garratt and congratulates Cr Denese Smythe and Cr Pam Heaton on their re-election. These members will serve on Council for a term of four years until October 2023. They join continuing Councillors Kevin Trent, David Wallace and Denis Warnick whose terms expire in 2021.

At the Special Council meeting, Cr Denese Smythe was elected as the Shire President and Cr Denis Warnick was elected as the Deputy Shire President, following a vote of the elected members. The Shire President and Deputy Shire President will hold the positions for two years.

Acting Chief Executive Officer, Allen Cooper, thanked all candidates who nominated and congratulated those successfully elected.

“I commend the newly elected Councillors and wish them all the best over the next four years with achieving community priorities for our residents and ratepayers.”
