Former Alderman and Deputy Mayor Mary Horder has passed away at 98 years of age.

Alderman Horder served on Fairfield City Council from 1971-1974 and from 1977-1987. She served as Deputy Mayor in 1982.

She worked as a volunteer for Meals on Wheels in Fairfield/Liverpool from 1964-67, Secretary of the Cabramatta Community Centre from 1971-1984, Secretary of the Fairfield Community Resources Centre Committee during the 1970s and 1980s, and President of Fairfield Homecare Service from 1978-1985.

She was also a member of the Catholic Women's League and the National Trust of NSW's Parramatta branch.

In 2013 she was awarded an Order of Australia Medal for her service to the community of Western Sydney.

Fairfield City Mayor Frank Carbone expressed his sadness at the former Deputy Mayor’s passing.

“Our deepest sympathies go to Alderman Horder’s family, including her children and grandchildren,” Mayor Carbone said.

“Alderman Horder served this Council during a period of unprecedented change as the City transformed from a predominately rural town to suburbs in the 1970s and 80s.

“She was well known across both Fairfield City and Parramatta for her tireless service to the community and local government.”
