Media Release - An update on the Brookton Railway Station From the Shire President – Cr Katrina Crute

Residents and visitors to Brookton will be aware that the Railway Station building has now been enveloped in wire fencing prohibiting people from entering the station platform and the building itself for safety reasons based on the recent engineer’s report.

While access to the Building and surrounds is off limits to members of the public, the Shire acknowledges that this doesn’t help the image of the Station or the Shire especially after all the ground work that has been done on the landscaped areas over the past few years.

The Shire is now waiting for a more detailed assessment of the building and unfortunately this process will take some time.

I understand there is some concern circulating in the Community about just how the building managed to get in such a poor condition but remember that many of the structural issues that now face the building’s integrity couldn’t be seen until further investigations were carried out. Certainly the footings couldn’t be seen until they were dug out and the full extent of the damage was revealed. The saying that “you can’t judge a book by its cover” is certainly true of the Brookton Railway Station Building.

At this stage, there has been NO discussion about the future of the building, nor the costs, or the timeframes and so on. The detailed assessment will provide some answers to these questions but I expect it will also raise some more issues. That is not an easy or a quick fix.

I thank the Community for its understanding and patience so far.

Cr Katrina Crute
