Support for sustainable projects

Projects that promote sustainable living in the urban environment are eligible for funding through a re-designed grants program that opens this weekend.

The Urban Sustainability Grants program combines two previous grant streams to create a single program with a broad scope that supports a range of sustainable initiatives.

Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds said the new grants replaced the former Dr Edward Hall Environment Grants and the Waste Reduction Grants, which overlapped in scope.

“The aim of combining the two grant streams is to create a more streamlined and user-friendly approach to sustainability-driven grants so the community can make best use of them,” Cr Reynolds said.

“We now have one easy-to-identify grant program with a clear scope that encourages sustainable initiatives.”

The grants will support projects that deliver urban sustainability outcomes in areas such as waste reduction, energy efficiency, climate change, air and water quality, food gardens, sustainable transport and local biodiversity.

They will be offered twice a year, with up to $55 000 to be awarded across the two instalments.

“Importantly, the full allocation of the previous two grants have been carried forward to the new format,” Cr Reynolds said.

“There are so many fantastic things happening in our community to make our city more sustainable and which others to make positive changes in their own lives.

“We look forward to assisting many wonderful new projects through this grants program.”

The first round of the Urban Sustainability Grants for 2019-20 is open for applications from tomorrow (Saturday 31 August) until 30 September. For more information about eligibility and how to apply, visit hobartcity.com.au/grants.
