Port Kennedy Skate Park Opened
City of Rockingham 27 Aug 2019

City of Rockingham Mayor Barry Sammels opened the park before a skate jam, sausage sizzle and scooter clinic were hosted for the community.

Located at Veterans Memorial Park in Port Kennedy, the new skate park was built after an audit of the City’s skate parks in 2015 identified that the original skate park on site was due for replacement.

In what is an exciting first for the City, the new skate park has been designed to include bowl, street and plaza skate elements. In addition, the skate park also has supporting infrastructure that includes half-court basketball, shelters, drink fountain, toilets, bike racks and parking.

Mayor Barry Sammels said the new skate had been carefully designed following extensive feedback from the community.

“The skate park is an exciting addition to Veterans Memorial Park and has been designed to cater for various skill levels,” Mayor Sammels said.

“During consultation with the community the City carefully considered the thoughts of those who were most likely to use the new facility. We received feedback from skate groups, local schools and residents before the final designs were crafted.

“The culmination of this is an outstanding family friendly recreation space that will become a great venue for skate competitions, clinics and other events.”   Demolition of the old skate park began in early 2019 before construction was finished earlier this month.

“Creating fantastic community infrastructure is a complex task and the City thanks Emerge Associates, Skate Sculpture and New Line Skate for their design expertise,” Mayor Sammels said.

“The City would also like to acknowledge the contribution of Advanteering Civil Engineers, who were responsible for carrying out construction on the project.”

The City gratefully acknowledges a $20,000 grant for the project from the Australian Government through its Stronger Communities Program.
