Have your say on Council's Draft Economic Development Strategy

Published on 22 August 2019

Residents are encouraged to have their say on a document that sets out a five-year vision for the Gannawarra’s economy.

The draft version of Gannawarra Shire Council’s Economic Development Strategy 2019-2024 is currently on display for public comment, with feedback accepted up to 5pm on Thursday, 3 October 2019.

The 46-page document provides an economic overview of the Gannawarra and outlines four strategic directions for the next five years:

Facilitate the development of a diverse agricultural sector; Drive population growth through business and lifestyle attraction; Facilitate the development of the Gannawarra as an environmental leader; and Develop the tourism sector through improvements in product and infrastructure.

“Council’s Draft Economic Development Strategy 2019-2024 draws on the Gannawarra Shire Council Plan 2017-2021 to capture the strategic directions of Council and community, while analysing the current economic climate to determine strategic actions aimed at maximising the economic value of the Gannawarra,” Mayor Lorraine Learmonth said.

“Over recent years local economic circumstances have changed considerably with issues relating to water policy and pricing, climate variability, demographic changes, agricultural volatility and the changing patterns of retail consumers.

“The updated strategy highlights the natural strengths of the local area and how these built and environmental assets can be better utilised to diversify and stimulate the local economy.”

Copies of the Draft Economic Development Strategy 2019-2024 can be inspected at the Cohuna and Kerang Customer Service Centres, Gateway to Gannawarra Visitor Centre in Cohuna, the Sir John Gorton Library in Kerang and online.

Feedback will be accepted in writing via email to [email protected]; delivered in person to either of Council’s offices, located at 47 Victoria Street, Kerang or 23-25 King Edward Street, Cohuna; or by post to PO Box 287, Kerang VIC 3579.
